General Practice
(With an Emphasis On The Following)

Gastrointestinal

Reflux/GERD/Heartburn - in most cases is caused by low stomach acid not excess acid. You need a certain amount of acid to allow the valve at the end of the stomach to open in a timely manner. Low acid delays stomach emptying resulting in reflux of the stomach contents into the esophagus. These contents are still acidic and can cause erosions of the lining of the esophagus. Taking antacids or acid blockers reduces stomach acid further and results in the inability to digest food properly and decreased absorption of B12, Ca, and Iron. Long term affects of poor digestion is malnutrition, constipation or diarrhea, gas and bloating to name a few.

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) - This is the most common gastrointestinal disease seen by general practitioners, covering about 30-50% of their referrals to gastroenterologists. Patients present in one of three ways: with spastic colitis causing pain and constipation; with chronic watery diarrhea showing high levels of mucus; or with abdominal pain and alternating constipation and diarrhea. There are several natural therapies that can be done to help. Naturopathic medicine has been very successful in treating IBS

Constipation - this can be due to many reasons. IF you are not having 1 BM per day, you are putting yourself at risk for many chronic disease. Less than 1 BM per day results in reabsorption of the toxins your liver filtered out of the blood and eliminated through the intestinal tract. Naturopathy can help to increase bowel motility and improve overall bowel function.

Crohn's - Crohn's disease is a poorly understood inflammatory disease that affects the final part of the small intestine and the beginning section of the colon. It often causes bloody stools and malabsorption problems. The allopathic medical community has little to offer in the way of drugs to help with this problem. Chron's is best treated naturally, with anti-inflammatory diet, elimination of food allergens, improvement of digestion, utilization of herbs to heal the intestinal lining, and supplements to prevent recurrences.

Ulcerative colitis - Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic disease characterized by bloody diarrhea and an inflamed colon. UC is relatively common but remains poorly understood. Diagnosis must be made by a health care practitioner-typically a gastroenterologist. Naturopathic approach focuses on getting to the source of the problem. Each person is different and will receive a different treatment, but there are some common things that need to be address. Healing of the intestinal lining with herbs and supplements, decreasing the cause of the irritation starting with removing food allergens and digesting the food, decreasing overall inflammation in the body.

Build the body back to health - we all have cancer cells in our body, but if we are healthy we have mechanisms in place to keep cancer from growing.
